Kilty Pleasures

A couple of years ago while in Amsterdam at one of the Queer parties off the Vondel park (great party!) I kept running into these two dutch guys. Butch and bear like with handsome beards-BIG dutchmen who were even more attractive in their "crisp" black kilts! I hadnt seen that before. I had only been familiar with the calssic (and then only in fotos) Scottish Tartan Kilts that stereotype the region. These guys looked very elegant and it openned me up to a new possibility. I asked them (after carefully complimenting them) where they had found/purchased/made their kilts-interestingly enough they had gotten them while passing through seattle washington in the states (!)- HAving contacted the company who makes them in seattle they told me that they would be passing through LA the same time i was scheduled to go see a show at the Hollywood Bowl.It cost i think nearly $200 plus dollars but I must confess that they are extremely well made. Made for the rough and tough some of us "guys" can put our jeans through-so it was well worth it.

What surprised me was how absolutely COMFORTABLE is was/is to wear a Kilt. I was amazed at how both cool and how warm the Kilt can be- there must be something about wearing a tube of fabric around your waist versus "biforcated" garments (ie pants). They are mostly comfortable worn 'commando-style' (=without underwear) or with a jockstrap (which can be really good if you sweat from how warm they can sometimes be). Its a bit of a different equation in the wintertime. Though you can be sufficuently warm under the skirt- the real hassle with the cold are your legs from your knees downward. For this reason I either wear them less in the winter or I wear them with a full "union-suit"- I havent had the money to afford tall well knitted wool or angora socks and the appropriate holders. Coincidentally I own classic high laced shoes purchased in the 80s in London that are usually worn with Kilts. Very elegant indeed. The 'Antifa' punkers heer in Berlin tend to wear kilts from time to time- but they are interested in a trashy look rather than celebrate the beauty or god forbid elegance.
