From Wikipedia
"Smörgåsbord, Swedish buffet. Smörgåsbord (Swedish pronunciation: [ˌsmœrɡɔsˈbuːɖ]) is a Swedish word which refers to a type of Scandinavian meal served buffet-style with multiple dishes of various foods on a table. In Norway it is called koldtbord and in Denmark it is called kolde bord. Smörgåsbord became internationally known as Smorgasbord at the 1939 New York World's Fair when the Swedish Pavilion offered Smörgåsbord at the Swedish Pavilion’s "Three Crowns Restaurant". It is typically a celebratory meal and guests can help themselves to whatever takes their fancy from a range of dishes laid out for their choice. In a restaurant, the term refers to a buffet-style table laid out with many small dishes from which, for a fixed amount of money, one is allowed to choose as many as one wishes....The term is also used [in English]as a metaphor to indicate any diverse group, synonymous with array."

"Smörgåsbord table setting:
Since the diners pick up the food themselves going round the smörgåsbord table, the table setting has to be planned in a way that allows them to proceed effortlessly in an even flow, not blocking each other's way and without any "bottlenecks" forming around the table.
The table itself is usually placed in the middle of the room, with enough free space around it. Like any dinner table, it may be decorated with flower arrangements or garlands, fruit bowls, candles, etc, provided that there is enough room on the table surface..."
