Some men seek unsafe sex despite knowing the risks of infection and the severity of its consequences. There are several reasons (or rationalizations) men use to deliberatetly put themselves and others at risk:
-Some men are under the illusion that AIDS should no longer be feared. They believe that AIDS is a manageable condition that can be treated with a few pills a day. Talk to those who've lived with AIDS for a few years - men who've gone through the agony of detection, diagnosis, those who've experienced one or more opportunistic, life threatening conditions - and you might think differently. Not to mention the financial burden an AIDS diagnoses imposes not only on the individual, but states and support organizations.

-Some men are impulsive and live only for today. They are willing to take the chance, no matter what the consequences. Some of these guys even derive pleasure from being perceived as a "risk taker."
-Some men feel invincible and believe they will never be infected.
-Younger men, who have not experienced the devastation lived through by the previous generation, do not take the threat of AIDS seriously. These are also the guys who think they're invincible, and that AIDS is a manageable condition.
-There are those who use barebacking as a form of rebellion against "the establishment" that advises them to practice safe sex.
-Some guys, if they are dating a positive man, might deliberately get infected to prove their bond or their devotion to their partner.
-Some HIV negative men are envious of the positive guys who "are getting all the attention."
-Some men make the fatal (and fatalistic) assumption that getting infected is unavoidable so they might as well have unsafe sex.

-Some men romantically think their "love" will protect them
- Some men feel hiv has nothing to do with AIDS and are willing to believe this theory even though all AIDS deaths have been connected with Hiv
-Some Gay men feel they cant get anything worse (even though they are now more open to opportunistic illnesses and various new drug resistant strains of Hiv)
-Some men feel if 2 or more men CHOOSE to have Unsafe sex that it does not effect the community
-Some men feel everyone should just be responsible for themselves
-Some men are just tired os safe sex and want a short break
-Many men dont worry about other sexually transmitted illnesses other than hiv
